Bright Blessings

Bright Blessings (formerly Birthday Blessings) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization serving the greater Charlotte community. The goal of Bright Blessings is to bring joy, recognition and support to homeless children and families during difficult and sad times in their lives. Every year, Bright Blessings makes a positive impact in the lives of thousands of needy youth and families across multiple counties around Charlotte.

As an all-volunteer organization, our dedicated "staff" of volunteers is truly the heart of all that we do. We offer many volunteer opportunities and service projects catered to people of all ages, and we host numerous family-fun events and fundraisers throughout the year. Sign up for our monthly e-newsletter so you can get all our latest news, stay informed about our community events and learn how you can help us celebrate the lives of homeless children.

The programs of Bright Blessings provide positive emotional experiences for homeless children and their families by lifting spirits, promoting confidence, broadening horizons, and supporting basic needs.

  • Shelter Party Program - Birthday celebrations are held monthly at shelters and housing/program facilities serving homeless children and their families. All residents are invited to the parties, and those with birthdays in that month are celebrated as the guests of honor.
  • Student Birthdays – In partnership with A Child's Place, this anonymous program serves homeless youth living in transient situations such as motels, cars and campgrounds. Homeless elementary students receive birthday snack bags and treats to celebrate at school with friends, creating joyful and empowering experiences for each child. Homeless middle school students receive Party-In-A-Bag kits with supplies, snacks, beverages and a small cake to share with family, strengthening bonds during times of hardship. All birthday students also receive a special gift package and a small bag of care-essentials.
  • Blessing Baskets – These beautifully wrapped laundry baskets are filled with baby-care essentials, clothing, and gifts to celebrate the arrival of homeless babies, while supplementing their basic needs. Blessing Baskets bring help and hope to needy mothers while providing a healthy and positive start to life for homeless babies.

New Partnerships & Program Growth

New agency partnerships formed in 2015 have expanded Bright Blessings' programs across Mecklenburg County and further into Union County, providing services to more than 1,000 additional children. New partnerships in Union County include Alliance for Children, H.E.L.P Crisis Pregnancy Center, and Union County Public Schools. New partnerships in Mecklenburg County include Alexander Youth Network, Changed Choices, and Supportive Housing Communities.  In total, Bright Blessings aids families and children in need affiliated with more than 30 agencies across a four-county region.

Bright Blessings has also expanded its Gift of Care program through a new school-based initiative that serves both homeless and disadvantaged students in Mecklenburg and Union counties.  The non-profit's Care Cupboard Services aim to ensure that basic essentials such as snacks, hygiene items and school supplies are readily available for children in need during the school day, or to take home as needed. "We have consistently heard from teachers and counselors that students whose families are struggling financially are also struggling during the school day," says Amy Cervantes, Bright Blessings co-founder and volunteer executive director. "When a child is hungry at snack time but has nothing to eat, it becomes harder for him to concentrate on learning. Our goal is to partner with local schools to provide basic essentials on a consistent basis that will in turn help these children become more successful in the classroom. Whether it's something as simple as a bag of snacks, a hygiene kit, or a set of school supplies, it's often the smallest things that make a very big impact."

Bright Blessings' Care Cupboard Services will initially reach approximately 450 students each month during the 2015/2016 school year.  Pilot partner schools include Fairview Elementary, Bain Elementary, Lebanon Road Elementary, Northeast Middle School, East Mecklenburg High School and Garringer High School.

Expanding Volunteer Opportunities

At its new location, Bright Blessings' Giving Village-the organization's main volunteer work area-will more than double in size, accommodating as many as 50 participants and offering a great opportunity for large corporate groups, faith-based groups, civic organizations and schools to come together in service to local children in need. The organization's enhanced volunteer programs are designed to educate, engage and inspire through interactive activities, informative presentations, and hands-on service work.  Ongoing volunteer opportunities will also be available for individuals, families and smaller groups, including Community Impact Sessions held weekly on Wednesdays and Thursdays, where participants will assist with a variety of projects to help the organization keep pace with year-round program needs. Family-friendly service events will continue to be available during the holiday season, as well as special volunteer events offered on weekends throughout the year and during the summer months.
